As negotiations for denuclearization continues between the US and North Korea, the severe state of human rights situations in North Korea has again been de-emphasized by the international community. Yet the persecution of real or imagined dissenters continue, as do the systematic human rights abuses of the Kim regime, which has been classified by the United Nations as crimes against humanity. Activists in South Korea and abroad have advocated for these concerns to be given top priority but those calls have largely been unheeded by leaders engaging with North Korea.
