Ciorciari showcases Japan as a "Courteous Power"

Japan has taken on a role in Asian affairs as a "courteous power", according to a new book by Ford School professor John Ciorciari, director of the Weiser Diplomacy Center and International Policy Center, and co-author Kiyoteru Tsutsui of Stanford University. They spoke in a webinar hosted by Japan's Institute of Southeast Asian Studies about the various areas of interest in which Tokyo is becoming more active, yet pursuing consensus-based policies. He was quoted as saying Japan has generally been very comfortable working within ASEAN norms of diplomacy, sharing ASEAN’s goal of preventing external domination while not seeking to dominate the region themselves.
